Since its implementation in 2023, 770 students in health sciences programs have been trained in recognizing and reporting child maltreatment, while more than 150 members of the public have completed the training. An additional 163 students will have completed the training by the end of the spring semester.

The course is mandatory for all School of Health Sciences students to take at some point in their education, and some Sanford School of Medicine students also take it as part of an elective course on trauma-informed care. The Recognizing & Reporting Child Maltreatment training is available for free online to the public.

"Recognizing and reporting child maltreatment is a responsibility we all share,” said Darla Biel, assistant director of the CPCM. “By equipping these individuals with the knowledge to recognize and report child maltreatment through free, on-demand training, the Center for the Prevention of Child Maltreatment at USD School of Health Sciences is strengthening the safety net for children across South Dakota."
