Gilman Scholarship Recipient Currently Studying in Germany
The Gilman International Scholarship is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. Students compete on a national level and have to provide strong academic, personal and professional reasoning behind their study abroad program and location. Gilman scholars receive up to $5,000 to apply toward their study abroad or internship program costs.
“This award is important to me because it values a group of people who are underrepresented and are in need of financial assistance in order to fulfill a dream,” said DeVries. “In my case, Gilman has helped me fulfill my own dream of studying abroad in Germany, and without it, I wouldn’t be able to.”
Born and raised in Rapid City, South Dakota, DeVries majors in International Studies and English with a minor in German.
“I fell in love with Germany and its language when I received the opportunity to go to there during my junior year of high school,” DeVries said.
DeVries is currently in Germany and will extend her stay throughout the spring on the Gilman Scholarship.
“Right now, my future plans are to continue traveling,” said DeVries. “I want to go to graduate and specialize in international education and become a teacher that teaches English as a second language. Studying abroad will help me achieve that goal. I am extremely humbled to have been awarded this scholarship and I still can’t believe it.”
