“As a leader, the learning never stops,” said Jackson. “The DHSLA allowed me to network with peers from around the country and learn from other leaders in the law enforcement profession. The DHSLA team brought in multiple leaders from organizations who have experienced critical incidents in recent years. It is imperative we examine critical incidents that have occurred to learn what went right and look for opportunities for improvement.”

DHSLA attendees learned from subject-matter experts in the areas of leading through crisis, resiliency, diversity and other contemporary law enforcement topics. Participants also worked closely in groups to discuss and develop proposed solutions to common challenges facing law enforcement.

“Leadership is a skill that must be practiced,” said Jackson. “A leader must continue to learn and evolve like an athlete who practices for their sport. One of my takeaways was a refocus on the ‘why’ of leadership. Here at the USD Police Department, I have the privilege of leading an amazing team that works diligently daily to create a safe and secure environment for our students, staff, faculty and visitors. I will continue to empower our team to be leaders in their own right as we protect and serve the campus community.”

Twenty-nine law enforcement executives from around the U.S. and one international partner were selected to attend the leadership academy, which was held April 22-May 2 at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC) in Glynco, Georgia.

The DHSLA traces its roots back to 2012 when discussions first began to establish a specialized homeland security leadership academy at FLETC's Glynco headquarters. Since its inaugural class in 2015, the academy has been a cornerstone in developing the next generation of state and local law enforcement leaders.
