Welcome to the Department of Family Medicine

The Department of Family Medicine is very complex and involves many aspects of the medical school curriculum, service and scholarship and we appreciate all the support we receive from the university, the medical school administration, staff and other departments.  Our academic and clinical faculty are dedicated to teaching and to our specialty.  The South Dakota Area Health Education Center (SD AHEC) Program Office and the Center for Rural Health Improvement (CRHI) are housed within the department.  The SD AHEC continues its commitment to connecting students to careers, professionals to communities, and communities to better health.  The CRHI goals include program development through grant writing/management, evaluation, technical assistance, and research with an emphasis on social determinants of health.

We offer students learning opportunities in Pillar 2 and Pillar 3 through preceptorships/miniblocks, longitudinal integrated clerkships or Frontier And Rural Medicine (FARM), cultural immersion, rural medicine, emergency medicine and electives including, but not limited to, health care for the underserved and sports medicine.

Educational Goals

  1. To introduce medical students to the discipline and specialty of family medicine and to family physicians.
  2. To provide quality, affiliated family medicine residency programs, which prepare graduates for practice in both rural and urban settings.
  3. To provide excellent teachers, mentors, role models and advisors for our students and residents.
  4. To promote family medicine as a career choice for students and provide support and appropriate counseling in this regard.
  5. To demonstrate the importance of continuing, comprehensive and coordinated patient care.
  6. To emphasize the biopsychosocial model of health care.
  7. To provide students with personal experience in the practice of rural medicine.
  8. To teach key concepts in preventive medicine, emergency medicine, geriatrics, nutrition, professionalism and ethics.

Student Success story

Success story Carl Lang smiling.
The Family Medicine faculty at USD were eager to teach and nurture my growth as a clinician. I always felt comfortable asking questions and being challenged as a medical student. I am glad I had USD Family Medicine in my corner throughout medical school.
