Harsh weather is inevitable in South Dakota. University administrators continually monitor weather forecasts and carefully assess all relevant facts when considering plans for campus operations. The results and impact of a weather system can vary amongst counties and communities within a region, and weather conditions can change significantly as a system progresses. For these reasons, decisions may vary from campus to campus.

The university’s decision to close a campus is heavily dependent on a variety of factors:

• Weather forecasts, timing of expected weather and considerations of if conditions are expected to worsen or improve.
• City and county weather communications.
• Our ability clear parking lots and sidewalks in a timely manner to ensure a safe environment for our community members.
• Considerations regarding access to classes and resources for students with limited access to technology or Wi-Fi.

Community member safety is a top priority. When weather is not severe enough to cancel classes but poses extreme driving conditions, students are advised to stay home rather than take unnecessary risks. Students should reach out to their faculty member; faculty will accommodate students missing class under these circumstances. Faculty and staff who are concerned about commuting to campus should contact their supervisor.
