The event provides students an opportunity to practice their networking skills while getting to experience a variety of industries that have a need for fresh talent.

“I placed a lot of importance on the speed networking gathering,” said Sally Hakin, a junior innovation and entrepreneurship major.

“Seeing what services businesses offer and who they are searching for was very interesting," Hakin continued. "It was crucial to bring my resume because many of them were interested in learning more about me. I picked up some new advice on how to get to know a company. I am very enthusiastic about the future after this experience. I anticipate attending more occasions like this.”

Experiences like this go beyond creating a career opportunity; they also open students’ eyes to the hiring process.

“This event was a great opportunity to get to know the companies,” said Hana Sugawara, a senior finance major. “As an international student, I was not familiar with the culture and hiring practices of companies in the United States. However, this event gave me the opportunity to talk to people from the companies and learn about their characteristics, culture and hiring process.

By receiving explanations from multiple companies, it helped me find a company that suits me," Sugawara added. "I am planning to do an internship this summer, and this event was a great opportunity to learn more about each company's summer internship program.”

Companies that participate in events like Speed Networking often find a lot of great takeaways and positive experiences, as was the case for the IRS Criminal Investigation division out of Sioux Falls.

“This was my first time attending an event like this, and I thoroughly enjoyed the ‘speed recruiting’ concept,” said Leslie Anderson, special agent & public information officer. “The USD students were prepared, engaging, fun and asked great questions. It seemed they had conducted some thorough research about our agency, which made for some great potential recruits. We certainly are looking to hire a few of the candidates we spoke with yesterday. Thank you to the USD Team for hosting such a great event.”
