Memorial Service for Chuck Baldwin to be Held on April 22 at Al Neuharth Media Center
Baldwin died unexpectedly Dec. 17 at age 70. He spent his first 35 years working as a journalist. He served as opinion page editor at the Argus Leader in Sioux Falls until 2007, when he was hired by the Freedom Forum and USD as the first full-time journalist in residence at the Al Neuharth Media Center in Vermillion.
He joined the USD staff as a full-time faculty member in 2014.
Baldwin oversaw Journalism City for the South Dakota Girls State. In addition, he ran the Al Neuharth Journalism Scholarship program, supervised newsroom internships for USD students and was a longtime American Indian Journalism Institute faculty member.
Baldwin served as a mentor for several years at the Crazy Horse Journalism Workshop held at Crazy Horse Monument near Custer. He served on the First Amendment Committee of the South Dakota NewsMedia Association and was a founding member of South Dakotans for Open Government.
