The USD Department of Theatre opens its season Sept. 22-25 with “Eurydice” by Sarah Ruhl. In this reimagining of the Greek myth, Eurydice travels to the underworld where she encounters the River of Forgetfulness, three talking stones and a lord of the underworld who rides around on a red tricycle. Striking imagery, poetic language and imaginative quirks come together in this unique tragicomic play.
Next up is “The Musical of Musicals: The Musical!,” which runs from Nov. 30 - Dec. 4. With book by Eric Rockwell and Joanne Bogart, music by Eric Rockwell, and lyrics by Joanne Bogart, this loving spoof takes one simple archetypal plot and turns it into five different parodies of iconic musical theatre writers from Rodgers and Hammerstein to Andrew Lloyd Webber.
USD Theatre enters the new year with “tick, tick…BOOM!,” an autobiographical musical with book, music and lyrics by Jonathan Larson. Torn between making money, creating art and getting married, the protagonist waits tables as he tries to write the next big Broadway hit. Three performers play 10 characters in this compelling story of personal discovery that is a rock musical uniquely blended with musical theatre styles. “Tick, Tick…Boom!” will run Feb. 16-19, 2023.
The season closes with “The Importance of Being Earnest” by Oscar Wilde from April 20-23, 2023. Mistaken identities and witty dialogue come together in this farce. Two young gentlemen maintain fictitious personae to escape burdensome social obligations. Complications and comedy arise when they must reconcile their alter egos with the women they intend to marry.
These four shows will be presented in the Wayne S. Knutson Theatre with evening performances at 7:30 p.m. and the Sunday matinees at 2 p.m. Season tickets, which provide a 25% saving over standard ticket prices, are $45 for adults, $36 for senior citizens (62+), and $30 for youth (k-12) and non-USD students. A form for ordering season tickets can be downloaded from the USD Theatre website or can be requested by calling 605-658-3484 or emailing us at [email protected].
USD Theatre will also be presenting the musical “Daddy Long Legs” in the Arena Theatre from Oct. 13-16. With book by John Caird and music and lyrics by Paul Gordon, this 21st century take on Jean Webster’s classic novel tells the story of the orphaned Jerusha Abbott and her mysterious benefactor.
USD will present its popular annual Ron L. Moyer One-Act Plays, featuring short plays directed by graduate and advanced undergraduate directing students, March 24-26, 2023.
The Spring Dance Showcase will also return for the first time since 2019. This biennial concert highlights the work of USD student choreographers, who will practice their creative scholarship while collaborating with many other student dancers, designers, and technicians. The showcase takes place in the Knutson Theatre on April 30, 2023.
