Becca Jordre, DPT, Ph.D. ’21, ’99, received the “Academic Impact in Geriatrics Award” from the APTA Academy of Geriatric Physical Therapy at the APTA Combined Sections meeting in Anaheim, California, in February.

The Academic Impact in Geriatrics Award is presented to an APTA member who has demonstrated excellence and distinction in an academic setting related to geriatric physical therapy. The award recognizes outstanding geriatric education, scholarly contributions and innovative teaching methods that further the profession’s ability to care for aging adults.

“Receiving this award is a tremendous honor,” said Jordre. “To me, it reflects the strength of our USD PT department. We have exceptional faculty, outstanding students who are eager to engage and strong support for innovative approaches to teaching. I’m very proud to add to the national recognition our program has received.”

Jordre, who is an alumna of USD’s Ph.D. in health sciences program, has been a faculty member at USD since 2008. Her extensive work focuses on aging and geriatric physical therapy, including research and program development, such as the Sustained Athlete Fitness Exam for older adults, and teaching leadership in geriatric content for graduate physical therapy students. Her sustained line of research focuses on promoting lifelong physical activity and health among older adults and senior athletes, a population she has studied and championed for more than a decade.

Jed Droge, DPT, assistant professor in the USD Department of Physical Therapy and Jordre’s colleague, nominated her for the APTA award.

“In every respect, Dr. Jordre embodies the spirit of this award,” Droge explained. “She not only teaches her students how to serve older adults, but she also inspires them to lead, innovate and reimagine what aging well can look like. She continues to shape future educators and researchers who will carry forward her legacy of excellence in geriatric physical therapy.”
